Edit the Open And Save Places In Windows

July 21st, 2008 by shinko

The Places Bar in Windows appears in every save and open dialog in Windows. It is placed on the left side of the dialog displaying five locations that can be reached by clicking on them, think of favorites or quick links and you pretty much got it.

I already covered one application that can edit that Places Bar in Windows but it’s never bad to have additional applications available that can do the same in case one of them disappears from the Internet. (yes that can happen).

Once you start the PlacesBar Tweaker application you see the five current places on the left side. Those places can be moved around to arrange them in a different order. More important than that is obviously the ability to change a location into a different one.

Use The Opera Mini Browser On A PC

July 21st, 2008 by shinko

The Opera Mini browser was designed with mobile devices in mind. It compresses the contents before they are send to the device of the user who is running Opera Mini which results in lower bandwidth needs because the traffic is routed through an Opera server first to achieve that.

Pritesh pointed out that there is a way to run the Opera Mini browser on a normal computer by following instructions found on the Java on Mobile Devices website. It’s a bit complicated but doable for anyone with a technical understanding.

A user basically needs to download the Java SE Development Kit (JDK), the Sun Java Wireless Toolkit 2.5.2 for CLDC, the OperaMiniLargeDevice configuration created by the author and obviously the Opera Mini Browser.

Youtube File Hack Tool For Internet Explorer

July 21st, 2008 by shinko

Firefox users are flooded with add-ons that provide them with the option to download videos from video portals like Youtube but Internet Explorer users are somewhat left in the rain. The Youtube File Hack Tool tries to change this by offering Microsoft Internet Explorer users a way to download videos from Youtube easily.

This plugin for Internet Explorer adds itself to the right-click context menu. All the user needs to do is to right-click a link that points to a Youtube video and select the Download This Youtube Video that was added by the Youtube File Hack Tool.

A download dialog appears and CTRL V enters the filename of the video automatically in the dialog box, another comfort function of the plugin.

Live Mesh

July 21st, 2008 by shinko

If you haven’t managed to get into the Live Mesh preview then I would recommend you trying it now:

We are doubling the upper limit of our technology preview program. Our technology preview is still limited to ensure great performance and experience for our customers. You can now use Live Mesh just by signing in to www.mesh.com with a valid Windows Live ID. No waiting list at this time!

If, like me, you are a non-US citizen then you can still register by changing system language localisation settings to US, just find the ‘Regional and Language Options’ in the start menu.

What’s so great about Mesh?

I hear this a lot, and all I can think of is the Internet sceptics of the early 90’s. Constant synchronisation of our data across devices is just the next natural extension of what the Internet has done for our productivity and communication.

Numlock Capslock Scrolllock Indicator

July 21st, 2008 by shinko

The latest keyboard that I bough, a Logitech keyboard, did not come with those three lights on the top right that would show if the Numlock, Capslock or Scrolllock keys have been pressed previously. While that is not a big deal for me as I only have to press the corresponding key once again if it is activated or deactivated in the case of the Numlock key a software displaying the status of each key might be helpful in certain environments and for certain users.

I remember several calls back then when I worked for a huge financial corporation where users told me that our website was broken because they could not enter numbers in certain forms on the website. It did turn out usually that their numlock key was not active or that the capslock key was active. The first did not let them any numbers with the right numeric pad while the second returned the chars that would appear if Shift was pressed as well.

It always took a while to explain the cause of this and it probably might have helped if I could have told them to download the indicator software to tell me if they would see a green light above the three parameters.
